Biography

German dramatic tenor Jonas Kaufmann is undoubtedly one of the brightest stars in the contemporary opera firmament. Twenty years of performances on the world's finest opera stages, an extensive repertoire spanning roles from Mozart to Wagner, and exceptional dramatic skill as a true singing actor have secured his reputation as one of the most outstanding opera singers of his generation.

Among Kaufmann's most celebrated roles are the demanding parts of the spinto repertoire. These include Don José in Carmen, Cavaradossi in Tosca, Maurizio in Adriana Lecouvreur, the title role in Don Carlo, Des Grieux in Manon Lescaut, and Andrea Chénier in the eponymous opera by Umberto Giordano. In 2017, the singer made a triumphant debut as Otello at the Royal Opera House in London and has since earned acclaim as one of the finest interpreters of this immensely challenging role. He has also performed Wagnerian roles with great success, notably Lohengrin, Siegmund in Die Walküre, and the title role in Parsifal.

He is the creator of an extensive discography and a laureate of numerous prestigious awards. These include the International Opera Award for "Best Male Singer" in 2013 and the ECHO Klassik award for "Singer of the Year" in 2015.
